Schrijver Salman Rushdie (75) is vrijdag neergestoken voorafgaand aan een lezing in Chautauqua in de staat New York. De dader is aangehouden. Rushdie werd medisch behandeld op het podium om vervolgens per helikopter afgevoerd te worden naar het ziekenhuis. Hij is in zijn hals gestoken.

In 1989 sprak de Iraanse ayatollah Khomeini een fatwa uit over Rushdie nadat hij zijn boek De Duivelsverzen had gepubliceerd.
